In view of the further deterioration of conditions in the flood-hit areas of Africa, the Federal Foreign Office has again increased its humanitarian aid by 200,000 euro to a total of 632,000 euro.

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today in Berlin:

"The situation remains highly critical for the people in the flooded areas. The Federal Foreign Office and the Embassies on the ground are monitoring the situation very carefully, and remain ready to provide assistance quickly and in close cooperation with the relief organizations."

The additional funds will be used to send a ten-strong Rapid Deployment Unit for Water Supply and Treatment (SEEWA) from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief to Uganda. The team is leaving today. They will purify drinking water, test water quality and clean the wells for two refugee camps in the Katakwi region in the north-east of the country.

In Mali and Rwanda, families who have lost their homes are being provided with tents, household articles, blankets, clothes and food supplements. The funds are also being used to improve sanitation and hygiene.

The Federal Foreign Office has in past weeks already made available 430,000 euro for relief supplies and foodstuffs for the victims of the floods in Sudan, Uganda and Ghana. Further relief measures are being prepared for the affected regions.
